Exploring the future of smart off-grid power, global project updates, and technological breakthroughs.
Clear Blue Technologies today announced its collaboration with Tymat Solutions to illuminate pathways along Mohawk Road East and Eringate Park for the City of Hamilton, Ontario using Clear Blue’s Illumient Smart Off-Grid lighting systems. In total, more than 60 Illumient lighting systems have been installed across the City of Hamilton.
Today, about 13% of the world’s population doesn’t have access to electricity, according to the International Energy Agency. Most power is provided by the electricity grid, but this is expensive to install and maintain, and 50% of energy generation is lost in transmission (which goes onto your bill). Wireless power is an affordable, reliable, and clean alternative.
Clear Blue Technologies announced the installation of its Smart Off-Grid Illumient lighting systems in the City of Mississauga, Ontario. The project in Duncairn Downs Park, located in the Erin Mills Community, was completed late last year.
Our cities are getting smarter. Look around any modern metropolis, and you’ll see hundreds of Smart devices. Devices that provide better convenience, increase our safety, enable connectivity anywhere, reduce our traffic jams, improve our economy – all with a view to improving the quality of life for all.
“There’s a key piece of the “internet for the unconnected” puzzle that Clear Blue Technologies International is providing, and that’s smart off-grid technology to power these systems. The Toronto-based company is involved in the Facebook-led Telecom Infra Project, where it’s working with Facebook and other TIP members to deliver clean power and remote management capabilities for the TIP OpenCellular solution.”
One of the hottest topics at Mobile World Congress this week is 5G networks. The benefits are being widely touted by network providers: faster download speeds on cellular networks, and support for new technologies such as self-driving cars. The size and number of the “small cells” which power 5G also means that they will be placed anywhere in streets and buildings. It is going to be the biggest shift in telecommunications since the invention of the cellphone.

bizz energy, the independent business magazine for energy decision makers, recently interviewedClear Blue CEO Miriam Tuerk about the company’s expansion into Europe, during Miriam’s recent press tour in Germany. “Power supply with off-grid solar modules has so far been widespread, especially where there are no reliable power grids. Entrepreneur Miriam Tuerk also wants to bring the technology to Germany.”
Telefónica brought its first reliably 24-hour gridless cell towers online in Peru late last year. They serve 25,000 people in the Amazon rainforest, according to Clear Blue Technologies International, which makes the control systems. Perez says customers there pay no more for service than in grid-connected areas.”
The role of the once lonely street light has been heavily rewritten so that it now serves as a major information gateway, runs on solar power, and is sensing and reporting far more than you might imagine. Indeed, the global market for the smart street light is projected at $18 billion per year by 2024. While that number may sound hard to believe, the next time you drive under a carport or walk across an intersection, just look up.
