City of Harare

Overview
Churchill Road, a busy thoroughfare in Harare, lacked functional street lighting due to very old infrastructure, vandalism and degraded components.
The Challenge
Lack of lighting made it difficult for both drivers and pedestrians at night. Unfortunately this is not uncommon in Zimbabwe, and a new approach was needed that would provide reliable lighting at a cost-effective price.
Our Solution
A public-private partnership model developed by Barbara Rwodzi (MED Lighting founder) where investors fund the project in exchange for 20-year advertising rights on poles. This approach enabled infrastructure deployment without public sector funding.
Results
- Phase 1 completed with 44 Illumient lights installed on Churchill Road.
- Additional installations planned for Victoria Falls and other Zimbabwe locations.
